After two hair raising blitz tie-break games, the two champions were separated after their 5-5 draw in the rapid chess match. Anand won the first and drew the second to win the historic match triumph 1.5-0.5.
Anand received the jacket presented to the winner for his fourth title in five years. He won in 1997, 1998, 2000 and now 2001. It was sponsored by Landesbank Rheinland Pfalz and was part of the Mainz Chess Classic.
It was a historic triumph for Anand in a historic match. Both players received pen sets and also appearance fees which are not disclosed. Anand played the first blitz game brilliantly and caught white's opening mistake in the second to play positively and brilliantly in the second to make a draw. The blitz games were by far the most exciting affairs.
Kramnik may have dominated the rapid games but he was not recognisable in the blitz tie-break.
