ATANU HALTS NEELOTPAL'S WINNING SPREE

 By Manthan Chokshi in Jamshedpur

A. Das holds Shankar Roy (Elo 2326), C.J.Arvind draws with Jayant Gokhale, Koshy (Elo 2381) held to draw by S.Gupta

Atanu Lahiri (Elo 2385) displayed some classic Chess to outplay sole leader Neelotpal Das (Elo 2410) in the seventh round of the 38th National B Chess Championship and emerged sole leader with 6.5 points. Das countered Atanu's Queen Pawn opening with the Nimzo Indian Defence, Karpov System. Atanu took the initiative by some solid positional play having the isolated d-pawn. He posted his Knight on d6 square which hampered Das's development. Das sacrificed an exchange for the Knight but Atanu worked out the win comfortably in 37 moves.

On the second board , G.B.Prakash (Elo 2429) could not convert his exchange into a won endgame  against Gurpreet Pal Singh (Elo 2306). Gurpreet adopted the King's Indian defence and the game lasted for almost seven hours. Vishal Sareen (Elo 2303) and K. Murugan (Elo 2377) played safe and split points in 14 moves on the third board.  K.V.Shantaram (Elo 2233) and Sudhakar Babu (Elo 2365) also agreed to a tame draw in ten moves.

On the fifth board Tejas Bakre ( Elo 2358) defeated M.R.Venkatesh (Elo 2246) in the Sicilian Sveshnikov in 53 moves to take his tally to six points.
