NEELOTPAL DAS EMERGES SOLE LEADER !

Neelotpal Das (Elo 2410) emerged sole leader with a thumping win over Vishal Sareen (Elo 2303) in just 34 moves taking his tally to five points at the end of the fifth round. Vishal opened with 1.Nf3 and the game went into the Smyslov Variation of the Queen Pawn Opening. Both the players stuck to theory till the 16th move after which Vishal's 17th move Ne5 was considered weak by Das. Black (Das) got a dangerous initiative in the form of Queen side passed pawns and won with ease. Neelotpal was very composed after his win . When asked whether he is aiming for the title, Das replied that he is focusing only for "qualifying" right now.

While on the second board, a complicated game arose between second seed Sandipan Chanda (Elo 2446) and G.B.Joshi (Elo 2271) in the Sicilian Taimanov variation. Chanda playing with the black pieces was under some heavy attack on the kingside, but he was the better one to emerge in the complications and won the game in 27 moves!

A marathon game lasted almost seven hours between G.B.Prakash (Elo 2429) and M. R. Venkatesh (Elo 2246) and it ended in a draw. Prakash was better off in the middlegame with Venkatesh's pieces under developed. However the game went into two rooks ending with Prakash a pawn up . Thereafter a dead draw was reached with Rook and Pawn Vs Rook.

Atanu Lahiri (Elo 2385) won against Swati Ghate (Elo 2246) in the French Defence, Advance Variation . K. Murugan (Elo 2377) defeated Shashikant Kutwal (Elo 2236) and R. Preetam Sharma (Elo 2193) held Sudhakar Babu (Elo 2365) to a draw.
