| It was a day of upsets in the
second round of the 38th National B Chess Championship . Top seed
R.B.Ramesh ( Elo 2450 ) was held to a draw by Deepan Chakravarthy (Elo
2221) of Tamil Nadu. The youngster countered Ramesh's Sicilian with the
Alapin and maintained equality throughout the game. The queens were off
on the 20th move and the game transited into rook ending with equal pawns.
The game ended in 60 moves.
On the sixth board Dipanjan Das (Elo 2215) shocked 7th seed T.S.Ravi (Elo 2385) in the Giuoco Piano opening . Ravi had a good position in the middlegame and exchanged queens on the 25th move resulting in a double rook - double knight ending. Das played well on the queenside and posed some problems to Ravi's king. Ravi resigned on the 52nd move under multiple threats from Das. Second seed Sandipan Chanda ( Elo 2446) defeated Vedant Goswami (Elo 2221) in just 31 moves of the Ruy Lopez . Vedant played poorly in the opening and lost exchange on the 20th move. Sandipan who was very humble after his win said he converted his slight egde in the opening and won .While on the third board G.B.Prakash won comfortably against young Arjun Tiwari (Elo 2218) in 37 moves of the Caro-Kann defence. Other seeded players Neelotpal Das , Atanu Lahiri , K. Murugan , P. Konguvel also took their tally to two points. |
