| The first round of the 38th National
B Chess Championship saw no major upsets except on the 5th board where
Jaydev Saha (Elo 2131) of West Bengal drew with 5th Seed Sriram Jha
(Elo 2409) of L.I.C. Jaydev adopted the Pirc defence and got a very
promising position in the middlegame. As a result Jha was forced to take
perpetual checks and the game ended in just 16 moves.
Top Seed R.B.Ramesh ( Elo 2450) scored a fluent victory over Thatte Ashish (Elo 2143) in the French Defence , Tarrasch Variation . Playing with the white pieces Ramesh took advantage of black's faulty plan on the 9th move and launched a massive K-side attack using his king rook pawn h4-h5. Ramesh finished off in style by sacrificing a knight on h7 on the 17th move to pocket the game in just 19 moves. Second seed Sandipan Chanda ( Elo 2446) also won comfortably against Mochabi Singh ( Elo 2142) in 40 moves of Sicilian Closed Defence with the black pieces. While on the third board G.B.Prakash (Elo 2429) won with the white pieces against Rashmin Pulekar (Elo 2134) . Pulekar sacrificed a knight on the 14th move and launched some dangerous threats around Prakash's King. Prakash remarked " The game got complicated on the 24th move but I defended well " . |
