Kasparov was lucky to beat Shirov when the Spanish player made a disastrous
blunder on move 31. Anand and Leko played a safe draw with the Hungarian
unable to get any advantage with white. Once the opening was over, Kramnik's
class told as he locked white's pieces to win material against Khalifman.
Round 1
One of the quiet days with all three games ending in draws. Kramnik
did not press enough with white against Anand, Kasparov's winning attempts
were squashed by Khalifman while Shirov-Leko was an exciting game until
the end.
Round 2
Anand missed a win and lost unexpectedly to Shirov with blunders on
moves 30 and 34. Kasparov played it safe against Kramnik and Leko's advantage
was sufficient to get past a solid Khalifman.
