The 29th Indian Junior Championship is on from December 24-January 2, 2000 at Sivakasi, in Tamil Nadu. This town is known for its fireworks manufacturing reputation and offset printing machines of which is has the second largest number in the world.
The Indian Junior Champion qualifies to represent the nation in the
next World Junior at Armenia, 2000 and the runner-up at the Asian Junior
Championship. In 1979, the Asian Junior Championship itself was staged
at Sivakasi. Five of our national junior champions have won the Asian Junior
championship: V.Ravikumar (1978), V.Anand (1984, 1985), Abhijit Kunte (1997),
Tejas Bakre (1998) and K.Sashikiran (1999). Just one Indian junior won
the World Junior and it is V.Anand in 1987.
The highest rated junior IM K.Sashikiran who is seeded for the world
junior is not competing at Sivakasi. But a large number of talented Goodricke
Juniors, defending champion Sundararajan Kidambi and World U-18 Girls Champion
Aarthie Ramaswamy are in the fray. A total of 100 players are competing.
