Frankfurt Chess Classic 2000
 

Frankfurt Chess Classic puts rapid chess to the fore. It features Computer versus Human Matches. This time organisers boast of assembling the world's best 10 players. "When did this last occur?" asks Hans-Walter Schmitt proudly. There is lot of heat in Frankfurt. Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov will square off for the last time before they meet in London on October 8.

The events
1. Ordix Open: 1-2 S.Rublevsky, M.Gurevich 12.5/15 each, 3 P.Svidler 11.5, 4 L.Gofshtein 11,  etc. 310 players, 31 GMs, 15 rounds Swiss, Rublevsky advances to the Masters as a qualifier, picking up 7300 DM for winning.

2. Computer Matches
Fritz6 on Primergy. Hardware: 8 processors of 700 MHz, 1 Gb of memory, calculates 2.7 million positions. 25-minute match of two games. Software: Fritz6 on server version. After five matches the score is 5-5!

3. Frankfurt-West Simultaneous

Garry Kasparov gave a simultaneous display on June 19 at Park Hotel against 40 opponents, winning 35 and drawing five games. Hans-Walter Schmitt, Mayor Beutel, Rene Wendt, Andreas Gytser, Daniel Baremitse (German U-14 Champion) managed to hold the champion. Wendt was `too strong' for the simul, Kasparov said. He  thought Wendt agreed to a draw in a winning position.

4. Frankfurt-West Simultaneous (By Vassily Ivanchuk. June 20)
Vassily Ivanchuk had serious problems with his tooth. Yet, he played the 40 promised chess lovers making 31 wins, five draws and suffering only four defeats.

5. Frankfurt Chess Classic Masters 2000 (June 22-25)
M.Adams won this 8-player double round robin with 10.5/14, finishing on plus seven. Last year, he was last with minus seven! Other placings: 2 V.Ivanchuk 9.5, 3 E.Bareev 8, 4 S.Rublevsky 6.5, 5 V.Topalov 6.5, 6 A.Yusupov 6, 7 L.Van Wely 5.5, 8 R.Rabiega 4.
 

6. Frankfurt Chess Classic Giants 2000 (June 22-25)

Opening ceremony. The players picked up footballs for their start numbers.

V.Anand won this 6-player double round robin with 7.5/10. 2 G.Kasparov 6, 3 V.Kramnik 5, 4 A.Shirov 4.5, 5-6 P.Leko, A.Morozevich 3.5 each.

7. Fischer Random Match, Artur Yusupov versus Fritz on Primergy

Fritz on Primergy humbled  Artur Yusupov in the two-game match sweeping 2-0.
