Priyanka And Gayatri Crowned Champions

Priyanka Vora of J.B. Vachha and Gayatri Velu of St. Louis Convent shot into the lime light by winning the Girls Open and Girls Under-10 title respectively on the day ten of the Sixth Bournvita Inter School Chess tournament being held here at Prabhodhankar Thackeray Sports Complex.

Priyanka & Gayatri won the title comfortably with and identical score of 8/9. In fact, Priyanka was assured of the title with a round to spare as she was leading the field by a margin of one point after the conclusion of the penultimate round. Leeann Almeida of Mary Immaculate, Natasha Mokale and  top-seeded Tanvi Thakur  all scored 7/9 points and were placed 2nd to 4th in the order of their progressive scores.

In the Girls Under-10 section Gayatri Velu also left the field behind by moving into the top gear in the last 4 rounds. Top seeded Saba Mhate of Father Agnel took the second place whereas Abigail Fernandes and Monica Maskeri were placed 3rd and 4th. All these three players scored 7/9 points.

Priyanka Vora and Gayatri Velu have now become eligible for the 1st prize of Sterling Pounds 50 (Rs. 3750/- approx.) sponsored by the London School of Economics and in addition, a sponsorship to play one national tournament.

The Boys Under-10 section saw another twist for the title race as Akshay Bhor of IES, Kandivali, scored a comfortable victory over Snehal Bhosale to take the sole with 9/10 points. Akshay is only 9 but is matured beyond years and has got a cool head over his shoulders. He uses the time on the clock to the maximum and therefore has got the potential to break into the top league. Snehal was joined the 2nd place by top-seeded Nitesh Bhat with a score of 8.5/10. The final round will decide the fate of the championship as Akshay is paired against Nitesh.

The Boys Open section is also geared for a close finish. At the end of the day, 2nd seeded and FIDE Rated Vaibhav Saxena opened up a slender lead of half point over rest of the field. Vaibhav is assured of the title if he wins he last round game. Five other players, Sagar Sadavarte, Sahaj Goyal, Anirudh Unni, Sarvesh Karambelkar and Kartik Viswanathan are breathing down the neck of Vaibhav with 8/10 points.

The final round for both the boy’s section is scheduled on 09/11/2K followed by Grandmaster challenge, a 30-minute test problem solving test for the winners and thereafter they will have the opportunity to lock horns with IM-Elect Vishal Sareen and 2-IM norm holder, National ‘A’ player, Sriram Jha, for a Simultaneous Display. The prize distribution ceremony is scheduled at 19.00 hours.
