Day Eight

Rated Players Struggles, Anand Sundar Takes Lead

The sign that India is going to be one of the super-powers in the field of chess, was evident here in ample measure on the day eight of the Bournvita Inter-School Chess Tournament here at Prabhodhankar Thackeray Sports Complex, Vile-Parle as the three rated players in the field; top-seeded Amar Kamat (2167), 2nd seeded Vaibhav Saxena (2158) of Father Agnel and the 3rd seeded Kartkik Vishwanathan (2050) of Jamnabai Nursee found the going tough in a tournament which is a mere inter-school chess tournament! The lead in the group was snatched by a relatively unknown school chess player in the Mumbai Chess circuit, Anand Sundar of Hiranandani with a score of 5/6 by defeating Kartik in the last round of the day. Top-seeded Amar Kamat was held to a draw in the morning session by Anirudh Unni and is now forced to share the 2nd spot with a big group of players witht 4.5/6 points.

In the Boys Under-10 section, Meghan Gupte of SIA Primary School, little Trichi Chawla of Father Agnel in Girls Open and Abigail Fernandes, also of Father Agnel, in Girls Under-10, now leads the field at the end of the day.

With three days remaining, the battle is expected to hot up for the championship.
