Day Five

                          Sneha, Purva Crowned As Champions

Sneha Gada of Birla Memorial and Purvya Variyar of Gokuldham High School were crowned as champions in the Gilrs Under-8 and Under-12 section respectively at the end of day five of the VI Bournvita Inter-School Chess Tournament 2000 being held here at Prabhodhankar Thackeray Sports Complex, Vile-Parle (E), Mumbai.

The three overnight leaders in the Girls Under-8 section, top seeded Siddhali Sheyte of Queen Mary, 2nd Macrina Lobo of Cannosa Convent & 4th seeded Sneha Gada of Birla Memorial won both their rounds to finish with identical score of 7.5/9. The progressive scores were applied to break the tie. Since Siddhali had suffered reverses in the early rounds, she was out of contention for the title. The progressive score of Sneha and Macrina was same but Sneha was lucky to edge out Macrina Lobo on the cut progressive score.

In the Girls Under-12 section, top-seeded Purva of Gokuldham High School expectedly took the title with a score 8/9. Former British (Girls U-8) champion, Ketaki Kulkarni of Chandrant Patkar Vidyalaya secured 2nd place with a score of 7.5/9. Two players, Trichi Chawla and Priyanka Punjabi tied for 3rd place with a score of 7/9. Trichi edged out Priyanka on a better tie-break.

Purva and Sneha will be richer by Sterling Pounds 50 sponsored by the London School of Economics. In addition, they will get a sponsorship to participate in one national tournament.

The Boys U-8 is heading for an exciting finish. In the 9th and penultimate round of the day, Ashit Pandya did a star turn for the section by inflicting a shocking defeat on the hitherto unbeaten Sudarshan Lamture of Fatima High School. With top seeded Karan Ajinkya scoring over Adiyta Udeshi. There is now a three-way fight to determine the champion. Sudharshan enjoys the advantage on account of his superior progressive score.

In the Boys Under-12 section, overnight leader, Akash Khalwadekar of St. Stanislaus High School continued to maintain a slender half point lead over his nearest rival, Sachin Kamath of Father Agnel after the end of 10th and penultimate round. Two other players, Vishal Shah of St. Joseph and Sanju Malaikal of St. Stanislaus are on the heels of Akash and Sachin with a score of eight Boys points. The outcome on the top two tables will determine the championship.

The day six is the commencement of the tournament for Boys and Girls Under-10 and Boys and Girls U-15 (Open Group). This fourth section has attracted more than 650 entries.
