The day two of the VI Bournvita Inter-School Chess Tournament 2000 being held here at Prabhodhankar Thackeray Sports Complex, Vile-Parle (E), Mumbai, saw the leaders marching ahead without any difficulty in each of the 4 sections – Boys and Girls Under-8 & Under-12. However, the day also witnessed the first casualty of the seeded player falling from grace as the 2nd seeded Mugdha Variyar of Goluldham High School in the Girls Under-12 Section and 2nd of the twin duo of Purva-Mudha, was shocked by 9 year old Gayatri Velu of St.Louis Convent.
Mugdha, who is one the most formidable of the girls players in Mumbai and who was crowned champion in the open category last year, was expected to account for little Gayatri Velu, who was also a champion in the Under-8 category last year but Gayatri Velu had other ideas. Gayatri, playing white, opted for c4 opening, the game was later transposed to Dutch Defense with the players enjoying equal share. However, on the 17th move, Mugdha blundered a full Bishop. The rest was a matter of technique for Gayatri who stayed calm and composed to score a full point in 36 moves.
The lead in this group is now shared by top-seeded Purva Variyar, former British Open Champion, Ketaki Kulkarni, Priyanka Punjabi , Steesha Bhojwani, Ruchita Lalmalani, Trichi Chawla and Gayatri Velu with full points at the end of round 3.
The seedings were also justified in the Girls Under-8 section as the top five seeded players; Siddhali Shetye, Macrina Lobo, Abigail Fernandes, Sneha Gada and Kavya Pai maintained their reputation intact by recording straight third victories.
The same order was witnessed in the Boys Under-08 section as the top five seeded players; Karan Ajinkya, Dhanvin Mehta, Nadeem Abdullah, Aditya Udeshi and Vikrant Pawaskar marched into the fourth round with all-win record. Since this group has attracted 178 entries, the top players are likely to clash in tomorrow’s matches where 2 rounds are scheduled.
The Boy’s Under-12 section which has attracted 236 entries also followed
the familiar pattern with seeded players having easy outing. The top six
players; Ashwin Ganapathy, Ninad Puranik, Anirudh Unni, Rohil Bhat , Sachin
Kamath and Vishal Shah were sharing the lead with 19 other players.
