(This file picture is from the 1999 match. Anand played Advanced Chess and Karpov was all by himself.)

A press release from Leon, Spain includes World No.2 GM Viswanathan Anand in the 13th City of Leon Chess Festival to be held from June 1-5, 2000 at Hotel Conde Luna, Leon, Spain. This time it will not be a match but an Advanced Chess Tournament. The other three players in the knock out event are Alexei Shirov of Spain (living in Poland), Judit Polgar of Hungary, Miguel Illescas of Spain.

The semi-final pairing will be Anand-Judit and Shirov-Illescas. They will play two games and the winner will advance to the finals where it will be another two-game match. Last year, G.Kasparov overcame V.Topalov after a long struggle and this year V.Anand made a short work of A.Karpov 5-1. The Advanced Chess in a tournament format is new.
